The Many Reasons Why You Should Schedule Duct Cleaning

Okay, so we’re coming to the end of winter, but summer’s still a little way’s off. You’re probably still relying on your heating system to keep your home comfortable during the day. So, since your heating system is working fine and you won’t need to use your air conditioner for a while, you don’t need to worry about any HVAC stuff right now, right? Nope! There is still one thing that you probably haven’t done for a while, if ever. Something that could both improve your HVAC efficiency and your indoor air quality at the same time: duct cleaning. Let’s take a look at why it’s such a good idea to have your ducts cleaned on a regular basis.

Ducts Are A Magnet For Grossness

Tell us something: Do you clean your living room every once in a while? How about your kitchen or bathroom? If so, why? Because they get pretty disgusting after a while if you don’t, right? Well, the same is true of your ducts. Ducts tend to accumulate all kinds of airborne contaminants, including dust, pollen, dander, viruses, bacteria, and mold spores. In most homes, this buildup gets pretty advanced because homeowners just don’t think about cleaning their ducts ever.

The problem with this is two-fold. First, buildup of these kinds of materials in the ducts can actually get bad enough that it serves as a kind of insulation. Air has a harder time moving through the ducts, which means your heating and air conditioning systems become less able to properly heat or cool your home. This actually costs you money every time you turn on one of your climate control systems, even if you don’t realize it.

The second problem with duct contaminant buildup is that they make it more likely for you to have allergy attacks or get sick. Most of the time, contaminants like pollen and germs are dispersed enough that your body can easily fight them off without you noticing. If you turn on a forced air system that’s connected to some dirty ducts, though, it can blow a concentrated cloud of these contaminants around the house. You then breathe in those contaminants, and become more likely to suffer ill effects. This is why it’s so important for you to have your ducts cleaned.

When To Clean The Ducts?

So, now that you know why it’s in your best interest to have your ducts cleaned, when should you have it done? Well, if you’ve never had it done at all then we’re going to go ahead and recommend that you have it done right now. If you’ve had it done before, and are just wondering when to schedule it again, then it depends. Most ducts can go without cleaning for a couple of years before they really start to get nasty. If you’re not sure, try consulting with a technician and see what they think.
