Should I Replace My Air Conditioner Before Next Cooling Season?

Should I Replace My Air Conditioner Before Next Cooling Season?

Well, folks, we’re finally moving out of summer and into the cooler fall season. You’re probably looking forward to some relief from the heat, but not so fast! You might still have one or two things you need to take care of before cooling season is over. Namely: whether or not to replace your air conditioner ahead of next cooling season. Now, you’re probably saying to yourself “Comfort Bear, you need to lie down. We’re moving into the heating season. I don’t have to worry about my air conditioner until next year!” Trust me, though, there are some good reasons to consider replacing your air conditioner really early. Let’s go over them below.

Do You Need A New AC At All?

First things first: do you even need a new air conditioner? Well, looking back at how your system performed this season, what do you think? There are usually some signs that your system is getting ready to be put out to pasture. If you’re not sure what to look for, here’s a quick list:

  • High Monthly Costs: An air conditioner that is adding way more to your monthly energy bill than is justified by how often you’re using it is probably close to the end of its life. The system is losing efficiency as it ages, which is forcing it to operate for longer periods of time and cost more from month to month. The only remedy for this is to replace the system.
  • Frequent Breakdowns: Has your air conditioner broken down at least once a year for the past few years? If so, it’s likely time for a new one. Breaking down that often is a sign that the wear and tear on the system is causing the various parts inside it to break down in groups. The longer the system is in use, the more often this is going to happen until you replace it.
  • Old Age: The average air conditioner lasts around 10-15 years before it needs to be replaced. Once it passes that age, it will often accumulate too many issues to continue operating properly (like those listed above). If your air conditioner is older than 15, you should definitely consult with a professional technician about installing a new system.

Why Now?

Okay, so presumably if you’re still reading this it means you’ve decided that you probably do need a new air conditioning system. If that’s the case, why replace it now instead of waiting until next year? Demand. Demand is why. See, right now everyone is concerned about getting their homes ready for the fall and winter seasons. Which means if you’re looking for air conditioning systems, you probably have a lot of supply to choose from and possibly even a lower price for whatever system you end up installing. If you wait until next spring or early summer, you’re going to be installing it during the peak season when everyone else is trying to do the same thing. Better to do it now, and that way you don’t have to worry about it later.
