Be Careful Of These Common Air Conditioner Issues This Summer

Air conditioner issues are common during the summer season. All that use puts added strain on the system, and for many air conditioners that’s enough to create new problems or exacerbate old ones. There are things you can do, of course. Scheduling preventive maintenance is one of the best ways to keep your air conditioner in good condition throughout the summer. You could just try going without air conditioning, but even if you aren’t a sentient-HVAC loving bear (you aren’t, are you?) you probably don’t want to spend the entire summer in the heat. Whether you’ve had maintenance done on your air conditioner this year or not, it’s a good idea to keep an eye out for signs that your air conditioner is in need of repairs. That way, you can call for repairs as soon as possible, and limit the damage to your system.

  • Odd Noises: Various strange noises are among the most common symptoms that homeowners notice of some sort of air conditioning problem. If you hear grinding, for example, it can often mean that you have some sort of air handler issue. The bearings in the motor likely need to be replaced, before the entire thing burns out. Hearing a weird sort of hissing sound? You might have a refrigerant leak that’ll need to be patched before it causes the system to break down. We aren’t going to list every weird noise you could possibly hear from your air conditioner here. Suffice it to say that if you hear your system making any noises that it doesn’t normally make, it’s probably time to have a technician examine it for you.
  • Short Cycling: Is your air conditioner turning itself on and off every couple of minutes? That’s not good. Turning off before it can complete a full cooling cycle is called “short cycling.” It’s usually the result of electrical issues and prevents your air conditioner from cooling the home as well as it should. That’s not all it does, though. While the air conditioner is short cycling, it will accumulate wear and tear faster than it normally does. The longer the system’s short cycles, the more prone it will be to develop problems. If you don’t want to have to replace your air conditioner early, it’s probably a good idea that you have it repaired as quickly as you can if it’s short cycling.
  • Low Output: Low output of any kind is typically a reason to call for repairs, as it can indicate a number of different issues. As we’ve already discussed, a malfunctioning air handler or short cycling can lower the output capacity of your system. Refrigerant leaks can do the same. A clogged air filter or frozen coil can also prevent your air conditioner from cooling as well as it should. If your air conditioner isn’t cooling properly, you should definitely call for repairs.
