Air Conditioning Issues You Still Might Run Into

Air Conditioning Issues You Still Might Run Into

Cooler temperatures are ahead, but we’re not quite there yet. There are still going to be a few pretty warm days between now and the heating season, which means you’re likely still going to use your air conditioner a couple of times over the next few weeks. You should know what to look for when it comes to air conditioner problems while you’re still using your system. You don’t want to have your air conditioner break down, at any time of the year, let alone now. The following are a few of the more common signs that your air conditioner is in some sort of trouble:

  • Falling Output: Not actually being able to cool the home properly should be a pretty big red flag that your air conditioner isn’t working the way it should. It’s also one of the first signs people notice that something is wrong with their system. There are a couple of possible reasons that your air conditioner may not be cooling well. If the system isn’t circulating enough air, then you probably have a problem with the air handler or the air filter. The air handler is the motor that circulates air throughout the home while the air conditioner is on. If the air handler malfunctions, the system will lose its ability to blow air through the ducts. The air filter can become clogged by not being changed often enough. If that happens, it will block most of the air from entering the air conditioner. Either way, you should contact a professional to take a look at the system for you.
  • Refrigerant Leaks: If, on the other hand, your air conditioner just isn’t blowing air that’s cold enough, then it might be because you have a refrigerant leak. Your system needs refrigerant in order to cool your home. It’s the refrigerant that the system evaporates and condenses back and forth to move heat out of the home. The lower the refrigerant level in the air conditioner drops, the lower the system’s cooling ability will drop as well. You should also keep an eye out for any ice building up on your air conditioner’s coils. That is a potentially serious issue that you’ll need to have professionally repaired.
  • Short Cycling: If your air conditioner is turning itself on and off every couple of minutes, that’s called short cycling. It’s often the result of an electrical issue and poses all kinds of problems for the system. First, your air conditioner won’t be able to cool your home well because it cannot complete a full cooling cycle. Second, it accelerates the rate at which the system wears itself out. The longer the air conditioner is permitted to short cycle, the more likely it’s going to be to develop problems. Make sure that you call for repairs as soon as you hear this happening.
