While there is the potential for hundreds of reasons for your AC to be experiencing problems, some reasons are more common than others. Here are some top reasons: -Frozen Coil A frozen indoor coil will cause a problem for the airflow, much like a dirty air filter would. This could be caused by low refrigerant, which brings us to our next possible cause. -Low Refrigerant Refrigerant is the chemical which cools the air. If this is low, that typically indicates a leak or other issue with the refrigerant process. Your AC shouldn’t need to be recharged with refrigerant often, so that typically means there’s a leak. A leak should be quickly located and repaired. -Issues with the Outdoor Unit If your outdoor unit isn’t functioning properly, it could be a lack of power. Another possibility is a faulty thermostat. The most common problem is usually with the fan. The fan needs to function to transfer heat from your home outside. It also keeps your air conditioning compressor from overheating and could lead to damage. -Problems with the Sensor If the sensor behind your thermostat isn’t working properly, it could cause your AC to cycle continuously. This is something you could potentially fix yourself if its just been knocked out of position. It should be near the coil, but not touching it. If you need to adjust its position by bending the wire that holds it in place, do so very carefully so no additional damage is done. -Drainage Issues It’s important the condensation on your outside unit is being drained properly. Check to make sure the drain isn’t clogged, especially on very humid days. If your home has any room air conditioners, be sure they are mounted level so that they can properly drain. -Inadequate Maintenance Simply put, your air conditioner will not work properly with dirty coils and air filters. Fans and compressors can quickly fail if your AC isn’t properly maintained. For any questions or for AC maintenance, contact Climate Control today.
Poor indoor air quality in your home can cause nasal congestion, dry eyes, headaches, nausea and fatigue. Additionally, it can lead to infections, lung cancer and other chronic lung diseases such as asthma. Those who already have lung disease are facing a much greater risk. Air pollutants that are common to hindering indoor air quality are as follows. Biological Pollutants These include bacteria, molds, pollen viruses, dust mites and animal dander. These pollutants can lead to infections and allergy symptoms. Ways to avoid these include washing bedding regularly, practicing careful cleaning and keeping animals clean. To avoid mold, it’s critical to control moisture in your home. Combustion Pollutants These pollutants come from sources like furnaces, gas stoves and heaters. The combustion pollutants like carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide are dangerous because they are odorless and colorless and interfere with your body’s ability to receive oxygen. Source control for these pollutants are ensuring these combustion appliances are correctly installed and carefully maintained by reliable professionals, as well as properly used. Secondhand Smoke Tobacco smoke is a major pollutant of indoor air. Several poisons are in tobacco smoke, including carbon monoxide and formaldehyde, as well as other cancer causing chemicals. Secondhand smoke can cause very serious illness and disease for nonsmokers, including death. The answer to this is simple- don’t smoke indoors or around children. Radon A naturally occurring radioactive gas, radon, is the second leading cause of living cancer in the U.S. This gas can enter your home through windows, cracks in the foundation or any other openings. Steps you can take to control radon including having your home tested and treated. Asbestos When inhaled, asbestos can cause asbestosis, the scarring of lung tissue, lung cancer or mesothelioma. Asbestos are typically found in roofing materials and insulation. To avoid exposure to asbestos, cover these source materials with an airtight seal or have them removed. The best way to fight against these indoor air pollutants is to keep them from being added to your air in the first place. The quality of our indoor air greatly affects our health, especially if you already suffer from allergies, asthma or lung disease. For any questions on keeping your air clean and comfortable, contact Climate Control KC.

Keeping cool this summer isn’t just about your air conditioner. There are actually several habits you can adopt to help keep your cooling bills down and keep you and your family cooler. Here are 10 tips to help you keep your cool: 1.Draw the Curtains. Keeping the curtains drawn will help your house from heating up like a greenhouse. It could be useful to have darker shades in the summer and lighter colored shades in the winter. 2. Use Aloe. Instead of heavy and thick lotions, moisturize with cooling aloe vera products. This will not only help with occasional burns, but will also generally lower your skin temperature. 3. Remove Bedding. During the summer, it’s time to ditch the fancy duvet. Stick to sheets only so you aren’t hot before bed. Our body temperatures lower as we fall asleep, making it difficult to sleep in hot weather. 4. Go in the Basement. If you have a basement, go downstairs during the heat of the day. Basements are typically 10-15 degrees cooler than other areas of the house. 5. Use Fans. Using a fan will continuously circulate your indoor air. Reduce the sticky and mugginess of heat in your home by placing fans in areas you spend the most time. 6. Dress Lightly. Whether you’re indoors or out, keep clothing to simple and light colors. Cotton clothing is the coolest and can protect your skin from a burn. 7. Stay hydrated. As you probably know, water is essential to keep you cool and important even if you don’t feel thirsty. Stay away from sugary drinks like soda and alcohol, these tend to increase dehydration. 8. Eat Right. If you make the right choices, foods can actually keep you cool. Fresh fruits and veggies, cold salads and fresh raw foods are good choices. Things to avoid are meat and other protein-heavy foods because they increase metabolic heat production and can add loss of water. 9. Take a Bath. Take a tepid bath or shower just around of below body temperature, especially right before bed. Avoid a cold shower because your body will just generate extra heat afterwards to compensate. 10. Lessen Activity. If you must exercise or jog, do so in the coolest part of the day (before 7am). Strenuous activity will stimulate your body to raise its core temperature.

With the recent arrival of spring, it’s time to discuss the maintenance of your air conditioner. Specifically, it’s time to consider your AC filters that ensure your system is running smoothly and your air is clean. Air filters are designed to catch pollen, dust, bacteria, smog and pet dander. When working correctly, your air filter helps you avoid having to breathe these in or sanitize your air. If a dirty air filter is obstructing the flow of air, these things can get clogged in the evaporator coil and use 5-15% more energy. While not having to breathe dirty air should be motivating enough to keep your air filters clean, it can also be expensive not to. If your air filters are dirty, this can lead to some costly repairs. Any dust and debris that your filter captures can cause real damage to your system. The good news for homeowners is that replacing your air filters is a simple maintenance. The hard part is remembering to do this regularly. So how often should these be replaced? During the warm weather, they should be replaced every 1-2 months. If there’s a smoker in your household or if you have pets, you will want to replace them every 30 days. As for what type of filter to buy, you can tell the quality by the minimum efficiency reporting value, or MERV rating. The higher the MERV rating, the higher the filter’s ability to remove dust from the air. In general, the higher the rating, the less dust and pollen will pass through the filter. We highly recommend when it comes time to purchasing a new air filter, that you don’t just reach for what is cheapest. There are many maintenance procedures you can push aside or put off, but good air filters are worth the price. Usually the cheaper, the less efficient. If you have questions about the right air filter for your cooling system, give us call. We would love to answer any questions or talk about our maintenance program with guaranteed comfort all year round!

Making your home energy efficient can be more than it takes for a complete transition. There are also ways we can be energy efficient at home by improving our habits. Here are some easy ways to effectively save energy and money: Turn everything off when you leave a room. This may sound obvious, but “everything” means more than just the lights. Be sure you’re also turning off the television and cable box, any lamps and any fans. Be aware of your thermostat. You don’t want this to fluctuate too often. Keeping this set a little bit higher during warm months (78 to 80), and low during cold months (68 to 70) can make a big difference. However, don’t sacrifice your comfort, especially with small children or elderly in the home. Look for an energy efficient label. When making new appliance purchases, big or small, look for an Energy Star logo. Unplug. If you’re not using your phone charger, hair straightener, toaster, power tools, etc., then go ahead and completely unplug them. Things used less frequently shouldn’t be a hassle to plug in when ready to use. Reduce your use of hot water. When you can, use cold water to wash your clothes and dishes. For even more saving, try to take shorter showers and avoid taking baths. Plant trees and shrubs. Good landscaping, particularly trees, will especially save energy if planted near your home. During summer, this can block infrared radiation that could warm your house, and during winter the bare branches allow the radiation to come through. Once you have taken these simple steps to becoming more energy efficient, it’s time to schedule an energy audit. During your home’s performance assessment, we will perform a diagnostic analysis on your home and its energy efficiency. This process consists of a series of tests that will help us determine where the most inefficient areas of your home are. The energy audit will also distinguish how much money you are losing and how new energy efficient products will save your budget.
Your home is likely your biggest investment. Making your home energy efficient will provide peace of mind for your family, wallet and the environment. The benefits of an energy efficient home are: Lower Utility Bills Energy efficient homes will save you anywhere from 20%to 30% on annual utility bills. An efficient home uses significantly less energy for heating, cooling and water heating. By using less energy, this will also help you save on maintenance for your ventilation system and more. Things like high-performance windows that block ultraviolet rays will avoid sun damage to carpeting, upholstery and paints. Not only are you saving on your utility bill, but you’re also saving time and money on home maintenance and replacing items. Comfort, Health & Safety By having an energy efficient home with a good filtration system, mold, mildew, pollens and allergens are greatly reduced. This will also make your home more comfortable with consistent temperatures and better indoor air quality. If your family suffers from allergies or hot rooms upstairs and cold rooms downstairs, these conditions will be transformed to total comfort. Environmental Protection By lowering the amount of energy used in your home, your home will help prevent air pollution. If more homes transform into this energy efficient concept, less fossil fuels will be used creating less air pollution. Less usage means fewer power lines and power plants which leads to benefits for your whole community. For more information on an energy efficient home and its benefits, contact Climate Control today.
Ever noticed a draft coming from around your windows? Ever noticed moisture in your attic, crawl space or basement? Not only is this effecting your indoor air quality, but this could be doubling your energy bill each month. At Climate Control, we can help you plan smart purchases and home improvements while maximizing your energy efficiency and saving you money. Our home energy assessment consists of a series of tests determining where the most inefficient areas of your home are. During this assessment, your auditor also inspect your home’s indoor air quality. If any issues arrive, a set of solutions will then be developed. At Climate Control, our technicians will ensure that your home’s ventilation system is working properly so the air you breathe is fresh and clean. Any excessive air leakage or old insulation methods could result in polluted indoor air. These pollutants and irritants in your indoor air can cause minor health problems such as allergies and respiratory issues. If these issues aren’t cared for, they can lead to more major health problems like severe asthma and allergic reactions. Our experts will ensure water heaters, gas stoves, boilers, clothes dryers and even bathroom fans in your home are properly venting. If not, the number of pollutants in your home will only increase. Your crawl space is also a large indication of the quality of your indoor air. Our solutions expert will be sure to make sure your crawl space is saving you money on your energy bill, not increasing it.
For homeowners, a little prevention saves a lot of future hassle to keep your home comfortable. Regular home maintenance is also the key to preserving the value of your home. This proactive maintenance will ensure safety, enhance curb appeal, and lower risks of costly major repairs. These minor upkeeps and repairs may seem low priority now, but before you know it they can turn from minor to very major. Things like small cracks in the caulk around your windows, failing to change the air filters regularly, or moisture getting into your air ducts resulting in mold can prove to be costly if not attended to in the early stages. It’s clear that the consequences of neglected home maintenance are outright damages to your home. Your overall property value is affected without regular upkeep. Additionally, a home with sagging gutters, chipping paint, mold damage, or drafts or leaks is going to be very problematic when it comes time to sell. Proactive maintenance is going to be recognized by an appraiser when it comes time to determining your home’s value. Our advice: play offense, not defense. Take the initiative by scheduling regular inspections. Plan ahead by having your air conditioner serviced during the winter months. Also, if you do plan on selling anytime soon, keep track of your maintenance and repairs. Don’t be blindsided by any major repairs by keeping up on your home’s maintenance. Stay comfortable while safeguarding your home’s value. For questions or for more information, contact Climate Control KC.
The dry air of winter can really make us uncomfortable.

Are your kids running for the hills when you try to hug them? Can you start a small fire just by sliding off the couch? It may be your personality but in winter it’s probably just a lack of humidity.

Lack of humidity in your home can be hair raising.

We’re still in a drought in Kansas City and the air just gets drier and drier. Continued use of our furnaces just make the problem worse. The lack of humidity in the air causes us to create the sparks that can sometimes be painful.

It’s simple to remedy this situation. A humidifier can add much-needed moisture into the air to prevent all these problems. There are a couple of options to choose to combat the dryness.

Console humidifiers are meant for a single room and can be moved around. They are very limited in scope and will only benefit one or two rooms. They can be especially good in bedrooms at night to prevent the irritated throat and nasal passages dry air can cause while you sleep.

Whole-house humidifiers are the best as they circulate moisture throughout the house and keep the humidity at a steady level. They typically attach to the furnace and use the same ductwork to circulate the moist air. Unlike console units they don’t require the frequent cleaning to prevent the accumulation of dirt, bacteria, and mold.

A properly humidified home can save you money. Moist air feels warmer than dry air at the same temperature and moist air retains heat better. This means energy savings because you can keep your thermostat just a few degrees cooler without affecting your comfort.

Climate Control Kansas City can fit your home comfort system with the perfect whole-house humidifier to make you and your family much more comfy during the winter months. We carry three kinds, bypass, powered or steam, and we can help you choose the one that best fits your needs. We’ll help you keep those nasty shocks to a minimum so you can give as many hugs as you’d like without the shocking consequences.
